Overview

As part of the University of California’s systemwide Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnership (SAPEP) efforts, UCLA’s APEP (formerly Educational Outreach) programs work with students and schools in traditionally underserved areas to enhance the student preparation pipeline from passing the high school exit exam (CAHSEE), to completing UC and CSU A-G eligibility required courses and taking prescribed tests to achieve UC and CSU eligibility, to graduation.

Oversight of the UCLA’s APEP programs rests with the Dean of the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (Marcelo Suárez-Orozco) and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Janina Montero) who serve as co-chairs for UCLA APEP programs. The campus APEP co-chairs are responsible for coordinating campus units engaged in Pre-K – 12 and community college APEP activities, coordinating with other campus units that can assist these efforts, reporting to the UC Office of the President on UCLA’s APEP efforts, and well as serving as the main source of information and referral for campus vis-à-vis academic preparation and educational partnerships.

UCLA's APEP programs are the result of the passage of SP-1 by the University's Board of Regents in 1995 mandated the end of affirmative action in admissions (Section 3. Effective January 1, 1997, the University of California shall not use race, religion, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin as criteria for "admissions in exception" to UC-eligibility requirements" and mandated the development of new outreach programs "Section 1. The Chairman of the Board, with consultation of the President, shall appoint a task force representative of the business community, students, the University, other segments of education, and organizations currently engaged in academic "outreach." The responsibility of this group shall be to develop proposals for new directions and increased funding for the Board of Regents to increase the eligibility rate of those currently identified in Section 4.
